Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday decided to appoint Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the next army chief and Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), ending days of speculation.

Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir is currently posted at the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi. He is ranked top on the seniority list and has served as DG MI and DG ISI.

Gen Asim Munir was described by Shuja Nawaz, the author of ‘Crossed Swords’, a detailed account of the Pakistan Army’s internal role, as “a straight arrow”.

General Asim Munir is a Hafiz-e-Quran as well.

General Asim Munir will replace General Qamar Javed Bajwa who will end his six-year tenure as army chief on 29th November 2022. PM Sharif held a cabinet meeting earlier on Thursday where he selected Munir from a list of six nominees for the top military post.

Lt Gen Asim Munir is currently posted at the army headquarters in Rawalpindi. He has served briefly as chief of the country’s premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Rememebr that final appointment will be made after President approval.
